De Nieuwe Utrechtse School (The New Utrecht School) Education Innovation Fund

Healthcare is changing rapidly. We want to prepare our students for the healthcare of tomorrow. This requires education that moves with society. Think of themes such as diversity, well-being, and educational technology. You have the ideas about this, and we help you to realize them.

With the Education Innovation Fund, we provide support to teachers, everyone who teaches at UMC Utrecht, and everyone who is committed to education. The fund is specifically for ideas that would improve our education.

Do you have a good idea for better education, but lack the time or resources? Submit it before October 31. Earlier is also fine – the sooner it is approved, the sooner you can get started.

What are the requirements for your idea? uitklapper, klik om te openen

Whether your idea is big or small, it must genuinely contribute to better education. That is why we have five clear conditions:

  1. It enhances the quality of academic education or resolves a bottleneck.
  2. It primarily improves the learning and development process of students and/or professionals (in training). Research is only permitted in support of educational innovation. Projects purely focused on research, without direct application in education, are not eligible for funding.
  3. It ties in with at least one of our themes: Diversity & Inclusion, Resilience & Well-being, Translational Medicine & Life Sciences, Interdisciplinary & Interprofessional Education, Planetary Health, Patient Participation/Community Engaged Learning, Educational Research, Assessment & Evaluation, or New Technologies. Always consult with the relevant impulse team(s) about this.
  4. It requires an investment of between €2,500 and €50,000 per year.

Projects should preferably last no longer than one year. The budget will therefore be spent in that same year. If a project takes longer, the maximum duration is three years. After the first year, we will jointly assess whether and how to continue with the funding.

  1. It describes a measurable end result so that we can assess the impact on quality.
  2. It has been coordinated with the relevant program director(s) (or equivalent position).

In addition to the conditions, we also look at:

  •  How sustainable and usable your idea is in the long term.
  •  The reach and impact you expect.
  •  The feasibility of your idea.
  •  The relationship between investment and results.
  •  The creativity and innovative approach.

Extra bonus: ideas that connect society, healthcare, research, and education have an extra chance of success.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this money come from?

The money made available comes from quality funds. This money is intended to make our programs even better.

What kind of ideas can I come up with?

Think of (re)designing a curriculum to integrate one of the themes of De Nieuwe Utrechtse School into existing education.  Or purchasing or developing materials for educational activities that support one of the themes in education.

When can I use the money?

The money will be made available shortly after your idea has been approved. Projects should preferably last no longer than one year. The budget will therefore be spent in that same year. If a project takes longer, the maximum duration is three years. After the first year, we will review together whether and how we will continue with the funding.

About the themes

Patient participation: learning with the patient

Patients know better than anyone what good care is. That is why they contribute to our education and share their experiences.

Healthy planet, healthier people

Healthcare affects our planet and vice versa. That is why we learn how we can work together to improve health in a more sustainable way.

Interdisciplinary and interprofessional learning: look beyond your field of expertise

Good healthcare is a collaborative effort. That is why we already work with people outside our own field, such as technicians or behavioral scientists, during our training.

Diversity & inclusion: acting without judgment

Every patient is different. We learn to look and act with an open mind, so that everyone receives appropriate and safe care.

Resilience and well-being: take care of yourself

Healthcare can be tough at times. That is why we learn to deal with stress and change. Resilience helps both professionals and patients.

Translational Medicine & Life Sciences: knowledge with impact

Research is valuable if it works in practice. We learn how professionals translate science into innovations and better care for people.

Education Research: tomorrow's education

Together, we conduct research into education and training in healthcare. This teaches us how best to prepare healthcare professionals for the future.

New technology: smart and people-oriented innovation

Technology is rapidly changing healthcare. That is why we teach students how to apply innovations safely, effectively, and in a people-oriented way. Not only how something works, but also what it means for the patient and practice. We also use technology to enhance learning itself, for example with e-modules, online learning environments, and digital testing.

Quality and assessment: learning and improving together

Assessment stimulates students' development, independence, and performance. We work to provide good education by critically examining how we learn and assess, together with educational programs, healthcare professionals, and other partners. This allows us to continue to innovate and improve our education.
