Residence or insurance abroad
I do not have a Dutch health insurance and I want to make an appointment at UMC Utrecht. What do I need to arrange? uitklapper, klik om te openen
It is possible to make an appointment at UMC Utrecht or the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital as a non-Dutch insured patient.
For this, a number of conditions must be met:
- You need a referral letter from your practitioner. This may be a referral letter from a foreign practitioner.
- A clearly defined care question and known medical data (diagnosis, imaging, and possible treatment) must be sent in Dutch or English.
- The doctor will use the documentation provided to assess whether UMC Utrecht is the right place for your care question. An application is therefore no guarantee of treatment.
- If the doctor indicates that you are eligible for an initial consultation, we will first coordinate financially how the consultation will be paid for. Once this is finalized, an appointment is scheduled in accordance with waiting time. What the financial reconciliation entails is explained in more detail later on this page.
- After the first appointment, it is assessed whether any treatment will follow. If that is the case, again, the treatment will be financially reconciled first.

You do not have Dutch health insurance. Therefore, we need to agree together how the care will be paid for. There are three possibilities:
- S2 form: if you have an European health insurance, you can contact your insurer and ask them to issue an S2 form for planned care abroad.
- Guarantee of Payment (GOP): if you have an international health insurance, you can contact them and ask them to issue a GOP for planned care abroad.
- Price indication: if the health insurer does not issue a guarantee of payment, or if you have no insurance, a price indication will be drawn up. Only once this has been paid will an initial consultation be scheduled. This price indication is an estimate of the costs. This means that the final cost may be higher or lower, depending on the operations performed and the length of time in which they have taken place. Keep in mind that in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as complications, the costs may even be many times higher. After the conclusion of the entire care process, which takes 90 - 120 days, the final amount will be settled with the payment of the price indication.
