The Cardiology and the Orthopedics department of the RMCU (UMC) jointly succeeded in the making of a functional, 3D-printed cardiac patch: the original research article “Melt electrowriting allows tailored microstructural and mechanical design of scaffolds to advance functional human myocardial tissue formation” can now be found in Advanced Functional Materials. But how do different departments come together? We talked with Miguel Castilho and Alain van Mil, first shared authors from the two different research groups, to find out more about their work and how it came together in this project.

The European Commission has granted over € 6.4 million from the Horizon 2020 research program to a consortium of researchers, doctors and dialysis providers. The UMC Utrecht will lead this Consortium. The aim of the trial is to address the hypothesis that hemodiafiltration is superior to the standard hemodialysis in its effects on cardiovascular disease, mortality and on patient’s perspectives.

Smokers suffering from cardiovascular disease who quit smoking extend their life by an average of five years. Moreover, the chance of a next cardiovascular event is postponed by 10 years, on average. This is the outcome of a study among almost 5000 patients suffering from cardiovascular disease, one third of whom continued smoking after, for instance, an initial heart attack, cerebral infarction or medical treatment. UMC Utrecht researcher Johanneke van den Berg is to obtain her doctorate with this study on Thursday.

At the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht a pacemaker has been implanted in patients with heart failure using three-dimensional imaging to position the stimulation wires on the heart for the first time. Cardiologists expect this technology to render pacemakers much more effective in patients with heart failure than is presently the case and to potentially reduce the burden and mortality associated with the disease.
