Social Jetlag uitklapper, klik om te openen
‘Social Jetlag’ refers to the misalignment of our internal biological clock time and social time (e.g. school / work schedules), which often becomes apparent in delayed sleep times on free versus work days. Chronotype (morningness / eveningness) reflects the individual preference for the timing of sleep and activity and becomes progressively later throughout adolescence. Aggrevated by developmental changes in the circadian timing system, maximal phase delays of sleep/wake cycles are shown at the age of 19.5 (women) or 21 (men).
Social jet lag and chronic sleep loss severely impact daily functioning and are likely to contribute to health problems such as mood disorders, cognitive disorders, obesity, diabetes type II and addiction. Circadian rhythm disfunction may have a genetic background (e.g. clock genes) and/or may arise from behavioural lifestyle (e.g. disrupting artificial evening light exposure).
This masterclass will focus on causes of social jet lag, individual and societal consequences of living against your body clock, and clinical cases of social jet lag. How to fix a ‘broken clock’?
