Sometimes talking to a doctor or member of the nursing staff is not easy. Because of a language barrier, for instance. In such cases, you can enlist the services of an interpreter.

In the UMC Utrecht we work with interpreters from the Tolk- en Vertaalcentrum Nederland ("Netherlands Interpreting & Translation Center" or TVCN). The ward will contact the TVCN for a telephone interpreter (interpreting hotline) or an interpreter who will attend the appointment.

The interpreters have a duty of confidentiality. That means that they are not allowed to talk about your situation or treatment with others.

Need an interpreter? Then ask your nurse.
