Biography

Prof. Janneke van de Wijgert, MD PhD MPH, is a translational infectious disease researcher, educated in biomedical sciences and medicine (Utrecht University, Netherlands), and public health epidemiology (University of California at Berkeley, USA). Her work experience includes clinical epidemiological and public health research, laboratory research, and product development in various European, African, Asian, and American countries. Former employers include the University of California at San Franciscio (5 years of which as Director of the UZ-UCSF Collaborative HIV Research Program in Harare, Zimbabwe), the Population Council in New York, and the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development at the Amsterdam University Medical Center. She was appointed Full Professor in the Institute of Infection and Global Health at the University of Liverpool in 2012 and in the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the University Medical Center Utrecht in 2017. She currently still divides her time between Utrecht and Liverpool. She has supervised/is supervising multiple PhD, Master’s and Bachelor students, and has published more than 160 peer-reviewed papers.

Janneke van de Wijgert’s main areas of research and teaching include 1) general infectious and immune-mediated disease epidemiology (including COVID-19); 2) the role of the human microbiome in health and disease; 3) the role of the cervicovaginal microbiome in reproductive and neonatal health and disease, and in prevention of HIV transmission; and 4) evaluation of diagnostics, treatments, and prevention interventions in these areas. In addition to traditional epidemiological approaches, she has specialised in incorporating ‘-omics’ and other complex biological data into epidemiological models. During the COVID-19 epidemic, she has worked with eHealth applications to control epidemic spread.
