Biography

Yvonne van der Schouw obtained an MSc degree in Human Nutrition at Wageningen University and a PhD in Epidemiology at Nijmegen University, and is an SMBWO-registered Investigator in Epidemiology as well as Nutritional Sciences. Per Dec 2008 she is appointed as Professor of Chronic Disease Epidemiology at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the University Medical Center Utrecht. In 2001-2002 she was a visiting associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA. From 2008-2019 she was director of the Julius Center research program on Cardiovascular Epidemiology. Since October 2019, she is Quartermaster Prevention for the UMCU strategic research program Circulatory Health.

A large part of her research program is directed at unravelling the role of (female) reproductive risk factors in occurrence and progression of cardiovascular disease, and specifically addresses three areas: (1) Does menopause results in an increase in postmenopausal coronary heart disease through steroidal or non-steroidal pathways? (2) Do cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis accelerate onset of menopause, as well as, later in life, an increase in postmenopausal coronary heart disease? (3) Is ovarian aging part of a general biological aging process, resulting in early menopause, coronary heart disease, and other chronic diseases of aging?

Side Activities

  • Editor of Maturitas, journal of EMAS

Fellowship and Awards

  • 2000: appointment as Associate Professor through the Aspasia Program, NWO, for the promotion of female assistant professors to associate professor
