The number of animal experiments at Utrecht University and the UMC Utrecht has remained almost the same this year. There is a minimal decrease from 20.576 in 2021 to 20.436 in 2022. This appears from the joint 2022 Annual Report on Animal Experiments.

AI foresees higher risk of breast cancer

Women with dense breast tissue are more likely to develop breast cancer. With the help of AI (artificial intelligence), researchers from UMC Utrecht have now found a factor that may be an additional indicator that cancer is developing within dense breasts: the extent to which the normal glandular tissue lights up on the MRI because of the contrast fluid. This result may ultimately help to more effectively use additional MRI scans to detect cancer in dense breast tissue.

The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) today awarded 188 promising young scientists a grant of up to € 280,000 through a Veni funding (Veni round 2022). Among them are six researchers from UMC Utrecht. With this grant, the laureates can further develop their own research ideas for the next three years.
