What is a nurse practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners constitute a relatively new professional group in Dutch healthcare. They are trained at the HBO Master's level. Since 2009, they have been working as independent practitioners at the interface of nursing and medical care. Examples: a nurse practitioner can independently prescribe medication or perform follow-up checks on treated patients. A nurse practitioner is authorized to independently determine medical and nursing policies. He or she ensures that all components of the treatment are well coordinated.
The deployment of nurse specialists has improved care. The sequence of examinations, consultations, and treatments runs more smoothly. And patients are more actively involved in their treatment. As a result, they are better able to take control of the care they receive.
It is the quality of your life that must be as good as possible, so as a patient, you are an indispensable link in the care team. The nurse practitioner helps you play that role.
