Cancer treatment
In the Cancer Center UMC Utrecht We offer the latest treatments, often in combination with each other. Which treatment you receive depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the disease, and your personal situation.
Our team of specialists will develop a customized treatment plan with you. This ensures you receive care that suits you, with the best possible chance of recovery and the best possible quality of life.
Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy It is a medical treatment using X-rays, a radioactive source, or a combination of the two. Another word for radiotherapy is radiation. Radiotherapy is also used after surgical treatment for cancer or in combination with chemotherapy or immunotherapy. In some cases, we can use the MR-Linac to administer the radiation; an innovative radiation device invented at the UMC Utrecht.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancer. It is usually administered via an intravenous drip. Sometimes, chemotherapy is given in combination with other treatments, such as radiation therapy or immunotherapy. The goal of chemotherapy is for cancer cells to die. However, healthy cells also die from chemotherapy, which can lead to side effects.
Surgery
Surgery is often an important part of cancer treatment. At UMC Utrecht, we perform surgeries with the utmost precision and minimally invasiveness. Where possible, we use a surgical robot or attempt to remove the tumor during laparoscopic surgery, so that you recover faster and often have fewer scars.
In some patients with metastases in the abdomen, a HIPEC treatment could be an option. In this procedure, visible tumors are removed during surgery and the abdomen is rinsed with heated chemotherapy. This treatment is only performed in specialized centers such as the UMC Utrecht.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a collective term for various treatments that strengthen the immune system. Immunotherapy has been the most important development in the treatment of cancer in recent years.
Targeted therapy
Cancer is a disease in which the genetic material (DNA) develops errors. The DNA abnormality is therefore the difference between a normal cell and a cancer cell. Nowadays, new medicines are available with which we try to specifically inhibit the growth of cancer cells by making use of that DNA abnormality. We call drug treatment that uses the DNA abnormality in the cancer cell: targeted therapy, or in English: targeted therapy.
Cell and gene therapy
Cell therapy is a treatment using living body cells. Usually, these are cells from the patient's own immune system. These immune cells are extracted from the blood and molecularly modified so that they can better recognize and destroy cancer cells. Subsequently, the modified cells are administered back to the patient via an intravenous infusion. Gene therapy occurs when the DNA of the immune cells is also modified.
Hormone therapy
Hormone therapy is a treatment with medication. The tablets and/or depot injections ensure that hormones cannot influence the growth of tumor cells.
Nuclear therapy
In nuclear therapy (also known as radioactive therapy or radionuclide therapy), a small amount of radioactive substance is administered. This substance attaches to cancer cells and irradiates them from within, destroying them.

It Cancer Center UMC Utrecht is an academic center. Our expertise stems from years of experience in cancer care, combined with scientific research and education.
In doing so, we work closely with dedicated partners at the Utrecht Science Park, such as the Princess Máxima Center, and with other hospitals in the region. In this way, we combine personal guidance with specialist knowledge and innovation. We offer the best care of today while simultaneously building the cancer care of tomorrow.
Minimally invasive and image-guided procedures
In the Cancer Center UMC Utrecht We treat cancer as precisely and with as little burden as possible. With innovative techniques such as radiation with the MR-Linac, robotic surgery, and laparoscopic surgery, we can treat tumors highly targeted, while sparing healthy tissue as much as possible.
The MR-Linac is a technological breakthrough that we developed in-house at UMC Utrecht. This device combines an MRI scanner with a radiation system, allowing us to continuously monitor the tumor during treatment and irradiate it with extreme precision. Our surgeons also use 3D imaging and the surgical robot during operations. This allows procedures to be performed with less strain, and you often recover faster.
This method of treatment often results in less pain, fewer scars, and faster recovery. This usually allows you to resume your daily life sooner.
More about our treatments
The latest therapies
In the Cancer Center UMC Utrecht Doctors and researchers collaborate on innovative therapies such as immunotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy. In this process, we use the patient's own immune system to specifically target cancer cells.
In CAR-T therapy, the patient's immune cells are modified so that they better recognize and destroy cancer cells. This approach offers new hope for certain forms of blood and lymph node cancer. Your treating physician will discuss with you whether gene therapy or immunotherapy fits into your treatment plan.
We continue to conduct research into new applications so that more patients can benefit from these groundbreaking therapies, now and in the future.
Cancer at a young age

Being diagnosed with cancer as a young adult is life-changing. AYAs (Adolescents & Young Adults) are people between the ages of 18 and 39 who, in a life stage full of plans and future prospects, are suddenly confronted with cancer. This brings with it not only medical questions but also concerns about studies, work, relationships, fertility, sports, or independence.
In the Cancer Center UMC Utrecht we offer AYA care: care specifically tailored to this stage of life. Through our AYA clinic, patients receive guidance during and after their treatment, focusing on what AYA patients need: medically, mentally, and practically. Together, we look at how they can continue to shape their lives as much as possible, despite and after the illness.
Palliative care
The chance of a cancer cure varies depending on the situation. If you know that you will not be cured, we offer appropriate care to maintain the best possible quality of life. With our treatments, we aim to slow down the disease as much as possible and alleviate symptoms (also known as palliative care). In doing so, we support you in staying as fit and comfortable as possible.
We also offer you mental, social, and spiritual support. For example, by putting you in touch with fellow sufferers or arranging practical matters in daily life. Together, we discuss what is important to you and what support you and your loved ones need.
Centers for Expertise for Rare Diseases
Some forms of cancer occur in only a few people. It is precisely then that specialized knowledge is needed for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
In the Cancer Center UMC Utrecht We pool that expertise within our Centers of Expertise for Rare Diseases (ECZAs). Here, specialists from various disciplines collaborate and we conduct scientific research to further improve care.
Because these types of cancer are so rare, we also collaborate in European networks. This ensures that every patient receives the best possible care, in accordance with the latest medical insights.
More about our Centers of Expertise
Scientific research into cancer
Our researchers and doctors work every day on new ways to better detect cancer and treat it more specifically. We also want to improve the quality of life for patients. We do this with scientific research towards better diagnostics and new medicines. We are working on cell and gene therapies and on new surgical techniques. In addition, we are developing personalized treatments, for example based on DNA or by means of the sentinel lymph node procedureWe also use organoids: mini-tumors that we grow in the laboratory from the patient's tissue. From these, we can learn how the specific tumor grows and responds to various treatments.
We do not do this alone. Together with our partners at the Utrecht Science Park, we have joined forces in Utrecht CancerWhere we conduct research together and work on better treatments, higher survival rates, and a better quality of life for people with cancer, now and in the future.
Cancer research always requires a lot of money. Help us develop our new effective treatments. Support us through the UMC Utrecht Foundation.
